The AI art project Schiele’s Ghost deals with the question whether it is possible to capture specific aspects of Egon Schiele’s artistic work digitally in order to generate new works with the help of technologies from the machine learning field.
We asked: can a computer imitate the style and expression of Egon Schiele? To what extent can an artificial intelligence capture his essence and emotions, and how must technology be embodied for this illusion to work? And what is the attitude of contemporary artists towards the fact that their artistic works could also be increasingly captured digitally and thus potentially made reproducible by machine? Is this a new art form? Will the machine bring Egon Schiele back to life? And who will confirm it as art? You, the buyer of the drop? A gallery? An art historian? The press? Or us, because we feel emotionally attached to it?
In 2021, „artificial intelligence“ (AI) is an omnipresent term that infiltrates all areas of life. So it does in art. Machine learning is capable of recording and reproducing the characteristics of artists, artistic trends and entire stylistic eras. Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet and other long-dead artists have already been implemented by AI and their style can be transported into today’s pictures.
The wide availability of information and the illusion of being able to generate artworks in a certain style at the push of a button will, of course, have a lasting impact on the perception and value of art.
For contemporary artists, too, the question arises as to what would happen if the core of their artistic work would be captured by means of this technology and their work could be replaced by an AI?
Furthermore, the question arises as to what extend will the progressive digitization of the art business in the field of fine arts – both with regard to the creation of art and in the archival field – have an effect on the reception of the present world in a few generations?
Finally, Schiele’s Ghost’s acceptance as art will be set by the NFT market, which is now occupying a whole new area of the art world. Can we create a work of art from Schiele’s Ghost that will find its place in the international art market? Or will it burn, just like banksy?
The big question is: will it find its place in the art world? Will a dialogue be accepted? Will it be the recipient, the art world and its protagonists, or the buyers who will ultimately decide whether it is art or not. What remains, however, is the possibility of a critical, experimental engagement with technology.
In the end, we will never know how Egon Schiele would have lived today, or how his life felt back then. But we could make an attempt to understand, analyze and simulate what we know from the past. What brings humanity to this technical subject is that we, the artists of today, can feel it and establish the invisible connection to his soul long gone. Creating a moment in which the artist’s ghost enters into a magic conversation and seems to be communicating with us over decades or centuries through his pictures.
Das KI-Kunstprojekt Schiele’s Ghost beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, ob es möglich ist, spezifische Aspekte Egon Schieles künstlerischer Arbeit maschinell zu erfassen um mithilfe von Technologien aus dem Machine Learning-Bereich neue Werke zu generieren.
Kann also ein Computer Stil und Ausdrucksweise von Egon Schiele imitieren? Inwiefern können dadurch sein Wesen und seine Emotionen eingefangen und wie muss Technologie verkörpert werden, damit diese Illusion funktioniert? Und wie stehen zeitgenössische Künstler:Innen zu der Tatsache, dass auch künstlerische Arbeiten zunehmend digital erfasst und somit potenziell maschinell reproduzierbar gemacht werden könnten? Ist es eine neue Kunstform? Bringt die Maschine Egon Schiele wieder zum Leben? Und
wer bestätigt es? Sie, die KäuferIn? Eine Galerie? Eine Kunsthistorikerin? Die Presse? Oder wir, weil wir uns emotional mit den Werken verbunden fühlen?
2021 ist „Künstliche Intelligenz“ (KI) ein omnipräsenter Begriff der sämtliche Lebensbereiche unterwandert. Auch in der Kunst. Machine Learning ist in der Lage, Charakteristiken von Kunstschaffenden, künstlerischen Strömungen und ganzen Stilepochen festzuhalten und auch zu reproduzieren. Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet und andere längst verstorbene Kunstschaffende wurden bereits von KI umgesetzt und man kann deren Stil in das heute transportieren.
Die breite Verfügbarkeit von Information und die Illusion, Kunstwerke in einer bestimmten Stilistik auf Knopfdruck generieren zu können, wird natürlich die Wahrnehmung und den Wert von Kunst nachhaltig beeinflussen.
Auch für zeitgenössische Kunstschaffende stellt sich die Frage, was passiert, wenn man den den Kern ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit mittels dieser Technologie erfassen kann und sie durch eine KI ersetzen könnte?
Des weiteren stellt sich die Frage, wie sich die fortschreitende Digitalisierung des Kunstbetriebes im Bereich der bildenden Künste – sowohl hinsichtlich des Kunstschaffens als auch im archivarischen Bereich – auf die Rezeption der Gegenwart in einigen Generationen auswirken wird?
Final ist es auch die Erforschung des NFT-Marktes, der ein ganz neuer Bereich der Kunstwelt einzunehmen scheint. Können wir aus Schiele’s Ghost ein Kunstwerk schaffen, das am internationalen Kunstmarkt seinen Platz findet?
Und wird es seinen Platz in der Kunstwelt finden? Wird der Dialog angenommen? Es werden Rezipient, die Kunstwelt und ihre Protagonisten, am Ende entscheiden, ob es Kunst ist und was nicht. Was auf jeden Fall übrig bleibt, ist die Möglichkeit einer kritischen, experimentellen Auseinandersetzung mit der Technologie.
Schlussendlich werden wir nie erfahren, wie Egon Schiele heutzutage leben würde, oder wie sich sein Leben damals anfühlte. Aber wir könnten den Versuch machen es zu verstehen, analysieren und simulieren. Durch seine Kunst wieder erlebbar zu machen. Das was die Menschlichkeit in dieses technische Thema bringt, ist dass wir es spüren können, die unsichtbare Verbindung zu seiner längst vergangenen Seele aufbauen. Einen Moment schaffen, indem der Künstler mit uns ins Gespräch tritt indem er über Jahrzehnte oder Jahrhunderte noch immer mit uns zu kommunizieren scheint.
