Taming the Algorithm – The Power and Limits of Computational Culture-The Art Process of Stephanie Meisl

In an age where algorithms silently shape our realities by curating our desires, predicting our behaviours, and framing our digital existence, Taming the Algorithm interrogates, deconstructs, and reimagines these invisible forces through the work of media artist Stephanie Meisl.

This exhibition is not only an exhibition of Meisl’s work, but an in-depth exploration of her artistic process, in which AI, automation and machine learning are not just tools, but subjects of critique and reflection. Her works explore the biases, absurdities and unintended poetics of algorithmic systems, revealing the often unseen ways in which technology interprets, distorts and co-authors our realities.

Concept & Themes

Stephanie Meisl’s work examines the relationship between machine logic and human intuition, focusing on how algorithms shape perceptions of truth, identity, and agency. Using installations, AI-generated imagery, text-based interventions, interactive works, performances, and stories, she explores the influence of these systems on contemporary life and invites the audience to critically engage with the systems that silently govern modern life.

Key Themes
◦ The Perceptual Errors of AI – How do machines misread and misrepresent reality?
◦ Algorithmic Faith & Machine Theology – Can AI interpret sacred texts, and what does it create?
◦ Digital Identity & Echo Chambers – How do AI systems reinforce narratives, erode truth, and shape selfhood?
◦ The Commodification of Art & Memory – When AI learns from cultural archives, who owns the past?
◦ The Politics of AI & Governance – What happens when algorithms dictate political and social structures?
◦ AI as a Storyteller – Can artificial intelligence construct narratives that transcend its own biases?
